"If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.
If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart."
(Nelson Mandela)
Aims of the Subject
Our aim is to instill in our students a lifelong passion for the learning of foreign languages and cultures by providing skills, resilience and enjoyment in a supportive environment.
We are proud of our inclusive languages curriculum that allows all students to make progress, achieve exam success and fully enjoy the broad benefits of learning foreign languages. At Rushcliffe School students have the opportunity to study two popular and worldwide spoken languages: Spanish and French.
Spanish is the main foreign language in the department which ensures continuity with the learning done in our Primary Feeder Schools. French is introduced in Y8 to approximately half of the year group.
Results and Uptake
We take pride in the large number of students who continue studying languages at GCSE and A level. We regularly have 8 GCSE classes, and 6 A level classes.
The MFL results have been excellent over the years. In 2012, 96% of the Spanish GCSE cohort achieved A*- C out of which 64% achieved A*/A grades. In French 97% A* - C and 78% A*/A.
A level results consistently secure 100 % A* –C grades with a high percentage getting A*-B grades.
