Art

The head of department is Mrs C Harrington who leads a team of two full-time teachers and two part-time teachers and one part time technician.

We aim for excellence in the visual arts and hope to create well-informed, autonomous and confident artists.

Rushcliffe has a thriving sixth form taking AS/A2 Art . The students are very successful and many go on to follow higher education in art related fields.

Last year students gained places to study art architecture at:

  • South Notts College (Art Foundation)
  • Sheffield University (Architecture)
  • New College Nottingham(Art Foundation)
  • Manchester University (Art History)

Extension activities are provided for gifted and talented students and workshops are planned for this year after school.

The Department organises trips to galleries and museums to enrich the students learning experiencies and to see original art works.

Topics covered.

Key stage 3

In year 7 - basic skills of drawing, painting, ceramics, and printing.

In year 8 -skills aquired in year 7 are built on and sculpture is introduced.

In year 9 - students use their skills to express their our own ideas.

Key Stage 4

GSCE students study topics of Pop Art, Still Life and figures. There is a GCSE Sculpture course which explores figures and faces

At AS/A2 level we explore the man-made and natural environment.

Levels expected

Year 7 Level 3 - 5

Year 8 Level 4 - 7

Year 9 (KS3) Level 5 - 8

The results for Key Stage 3 are above the national average.

Some students who work hard may reach exceptional performance by the end of Key Stage 3.

Current Developments

This is an up to date and well equipped department which has facilities for drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printing and ICT.

This year, the department is planning to improve their ICT provision by building a bank of e-learning resources. They also hope to improve their teaching and learning by implementing leading in learning strategies across all lessons.
